Mark Reitzer said the grant covers the bulk of the expected work but that any cost above $1.5 million is the city’s responsibility: “The estimate for that project is about $1,800,000. So the city is responsible for the difference after that,” he said.
Staff also described ongoing permitting work for channel maintenance projects tied to storm-sewer and channel improvements, saying an engineer has been pursuing DEC permits for three to four years and that questions from regulators have diminished; they expect permits by spring and said funding remains the primary remaining obstacle.
The project covers culvert replacement and related wetland restoration work because the channels are in wetlands. Officials said the channel work will require plans and permit approvals before construction can begin.
