Northgate student urges Walnut Creek to explore shuttle or bus service to reduce school congestion

During the public-communications portion of the Nov. 18 meeting, Northgate High School sophomore Sushane Andrei Kay presented a student-led survey of more than 200 classmates about how they travel to school. Kay said roughly nine in 10 students arrive by car and many solo trips create congestion on the single-lane road to Northgate, leading to longer commute times; 63% of surveyed students reported trips taking more than 10 minutes and nearly one-third reported more than 20 minutes.
Kay said more than 60% of respondents would consider a bus or shuttle if it were reliable, affordable and had convenient stops and schedules. She asked the city to work with the school district and transportation providers to explore feasibility and design. Mayor Darling offered Smadar Boardman, the city engineer, as a staff contact for follow up on safe routes to school.
Councilmembers publicly commended Kay for her preparation and presentation.
