During the Nov. 25 meeting commissioners conducted internal elections and handled routine procedural business.
On the approval of minutes from the Oct. 28 meeting, Commissioner Kleinhouse moved to approve and the motion was seconded. In roll-call votes recorded on the record, Chair Freeman, Commissioner Dang and Commissioner Kleinhouse voted yes. Commissioners Wei, Brown, Smith and Axelrod recorded abstentions (Wei cited her absence from the Oct. 28 meeting). Staff announced the motion carries.
For commission leadership the chair asked for nominations. Commissioner Wei nominated Chair Freeman to continue as chair; Freeman accepted. With no additional nominees, nominations were closed, and a roll-call vote confirmed the chair.
Nominations for vice chair produced competing candidates: Commissioner Brown and Commissioner Wei. Following a secret ballot procedure for the vice‑chair selection, staff announced vote counts: Brown received three votes and Wei received four votes. Commissioner Wei was declared the new vice chair and thanked colleagues for their support.
A procedural question was raised by Commissioner Kleinhouse about whether roll-call voting should read the names of who voted for each candidate; staff read the protocol and explained that the staff secretary announces only the winner and number of votes and that the elected officer assumes duties going forward.
Next steps: the new vice chair will assume duties immediately; staff will continue to refine administrative processes and will bring planned edits or clarifications to procedures to the commission if needed.
