The Brockton Finance Committee on Dec. 1 recommended favorably an order to transfer $100,000 from human resources benefits to fire personal services (non-overtime) to implement a one-year collective bargaining agreement for the Fire Department.
Mayor Robert Sullivan asked the committee to support the appropriation, praising the city's firefighters. ‘‘They do distinction with honor, and they put their lives at risk each and every day,’’ the mayor said while urging support for the agreement. CFO Troy Clarkson told the committee the contract runs one year and the negotiated wage increase is 1.5 percent; he said there are budgeted savings from vacancies that can largely fund the cost and that many aspects of the MOA were provided in the meeting packet.
Members had no substantive questions; a motion to recommend the order favorably was made, seconded and approved. The committee forwarded the order to the full City Council for final action, with staff noting the changes take effect Jan. 1 and that they will return for future bargaining rounds.
