The Committee on Appointments met Dec. 2 and heard a briefing on current board and commission vacancies.
Miss Bosker, who presented the vacancy list, said there are no appointments today but warned that Mobile GR will have four vacancies, planning commission and community relations will have several vacancies, and urban agriculture currently has four openings. "The mobile GR, excuse me, commission will have 4 vacancies," she said.
Bosker told commissioners the city is working to fill gaps and will publish an end-of-year appointment list at the next meeting. She also described a plan — worked out with staffer Patrick — to stagger term end dates for economic development boards so that reappointments occurring at the next meeting will carry term end dates of June 30 (effectively 4.5-year terms for those reappointed now) rather than December 31. "So they'll be appointed for 4 and a half years," she said.
Commissioner Nsasi asked whether Mobile GR seats are ward-specific and requested the current ward breakdown. Bosker replied seats are not ward-specific but there is a goal for ward representation; she provided the current resident membership as two Ward 1 members, two Ward 2 members and one Ward 3 member, plus three outside-city members (two of whom are leaving). Bosker noted that the two departing outside-city members present an opportunity to add more city residents.
The committee did not vote on appointments at the Dec. 2 session and adjourned after the briefing. Staff said the vacancy and staggering details will appear on the end-of-year appointment agenda next meeting.
