City staff told the Public Art Commission that CodeArt 2025 featured five interactive installations, projection mapping and live programming; staff reported roughly 25,000 attendees during the first three nights, 291 survey respondents and signs of positive downtown economic spillover with 75% of survey takers saying they came downtown for CodeArt.
City public-art staff delivered a CodeArt 2025 readout to the commission on Nov. 20, reporting a multi-night festival of interactive installations, projection mapping, live performances and partner events across downtown Palo Alto.
Staff said approximately 25,000 people attended during the first three nights and that 291 festival attendees completed a survey to assess experience and economic impact. "When they were asked, did you come downtown specifically for CodeArt? 75% of people responded that they did," staff said.
The staff presentation summarized outreach and promotion including social media, event flyers and paid ads, and noted a media spot on Today in the Bay. Survey responses showed a majority of attendees also made purchases downtown; the largest spending slice reported was under $50 but many reported higher spending. Staff and commissioners also relayed direct business feedback: local retailers and restaurants reported higher-than-usual foot traffic during the event.
Commissioners discussed signage and outreach for future editions after multiple attendees said they discovered the festival by chance and wanted more visible wayfinding. Staff said projection-mapping works were left in place for a week to allow more people to attend and that the event drew repeat visitors, live programming and community participation across age groups.
Vice Mayor Vicky Venker, council liaison to the commission, praised the festival’s community-building and retail support outcomes, and staff said they are exploring an economic-impact vendor analysis to deepen quantitative assessment before deciding how to scale future CodeArt events.
