Saginaw council rejects Brownfield reappointment after members cite remarks at skate-park dispute

Councilmembers debated the reappointment after an exception was raised to the consent agenda. Councilmember Michael D. Balls urged colleagues to consider statements Milne made at a separate skate-park dispute, saying the remarks were “not appropriate for a member to be on any type of committee, I think, representing this city.” Other members said they interpreted Milne’s comments differently, but the council proceeded to a roll-call vote.
The roll call recorded four yes votes and five no votes, resulting in the motion’s defeat. The clerk announced the tally as “4 yes and 5 no” and stated, “That motion is denied.”
Mayor Brenda F. Moore presided over the procedural discussion. Several council members who spoke during the debate recommended confirming processes and standards for appointments and emphasized the council’s responsibility to consider community concerns when making volunteer and advisory appointments.
Because the council voted the reappointment down, the seat on the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority remains unfilled pending a subsequent nomination or action by the council. The council did not adopt an alternative nominee during the meeting.
