At Friday’s meeting the Lorain County Board of Commissioners approved a series of grants from the Lorain County Honor Fund to support veterans’ posts and related projects across the county. Approvals included: $100,000 to VFW Post (North Ridgeville) for a storage/garage project; $45,200 to American Legion Post 12 (Elyria) for windows, ceiling tiles and furniture; $32,525 to American Legion Post 211 (Avon Lake) to install six door controls to improve accessibility; $10,000 to American Legion Post 8 (Wellington) for building materials and outdoor storage; and $44,700 to American Legion Post 30 for restroom modernization.
First Sergeant Steven Jurasic, commander of the North Ridgeville post, described the post’s needs and said the local group supports veterans and youth organizations. Post representatives and county staff emphasized the posts’ charitable work and community events; one speaker said Post 30 distributed more than $600,000 to local charities in recent years. Commissioners noted the honor fund is financed from year-end budget rollovers (approximately a target of $300,000 annually described in the discussion), and board members flagged a looming budget deficit and the need to consider long-term funding options during upcoming budget hearings.
All honor-fund grant motions were moved and approved during the meeting. Commissioners and Veterans Service Office representatives discussed scheduling, grant administration and potential training partnerships to expand veteran services.
