The Troy City Council heard an annual update from Avondale Youth Assistance on Dec. 1, highlighting programs that support students and families across the Avondale School District.
Chairperson Michael Kaziak (as introduced in the agenda) described the volunteer‑driven group as a 501(c)(3) with a presence in every Oakland County school district and said the board logged roughly 300 volunteer hours. Kaziak outlined ongoing programs: a student recognition event (33 students recognized last year; a recognition event planned for March 25 at Avondale Middle School), back‑to‑school assistance that supplied backpacks, supplies and clothing to 25 students, ‘‘shop with a hero’’ events in cooperation with local law enforcement, and support for families facing housing or utility crises.
Kaziak also reported that 130 students had been referred to the group’s caseworker in the fiscal year (July 1 to June 30). He described other initiatives — ‘‘Circle of Friends’’ (a safe space at the high school), ‘‘Screenagers’’ programming in schools, and a new parenting series using the Love and Logic curriculum — and thanked city sponsors, local police support and community partners.
Council members and the mayor expressed appreciation for the volunteers and for the organization’s role in supporting students during the holidays and year‑round. The council accepted the presentation, and the mayor thanked the group for coming and for its partnership with the city.
Avondale Youth Assistance materials and Kaziak’s remarks provide contact points for nomination for the upcoming student recognition event; the group encouraged nominations from the community.
