Delaware County officials reviewed an IT modernization plan Dec. 1 that would migrate email and other services to Google Workspace as a way to reduce on‑site infrastructure costs and improve security and collaboration.
Matt Kant, a member of the County Council and IT committee, told commissioners the county currently maintains a Microsoft Exchange server with roughly 42 terabytes of email data. The transition plan — proposed with reseller/implementer Resultant — estimates an initial year cost of about $192,000 (approximately $103,000 for licenses and $59,000 for migration) and a five‑year total cost of ownership that favors Google in the committee's analysis. Kant described the proposal as a "risk mitigation strategy" to address security vulnerabilities and aging infrastructure and said Resultant and Google had agreed to delay payment until April 2026 to ease budget timing.
Staff noted the proposal includes professional services for migration, training and project management and that some license overlap would be necessary during transition. Commissioner questions focused on timing, overlap of licenses, data migration and ensuring continuity of services for critical functions such as 911 and the auditor's office. The commissioners asked staff to return with a contract at the next meeting once final terms are negotiated.
No final contract was approved at the Dec. 1 meeting; the board requested the item come back for formal consideration with a recommended contract and appropriation.
