Parks staff presented plans on Dec. 2 to develop an 18-hole disc-golf course at Northwest Annex Park in coordination with Johnson County Disc Golf. Staff said the proposed layout would connect to existing trails, make use of underutilized space behind the park (ample parking available) and rely in part on volunteer labor from the county group for clearing and installation.
Staff said baskets are estimated to cost about $7,800 for the course and that the group has provided a proposal and draft contract; staff recommended moving forward with further planning and timing in the spring so tee pads and final course tweaks can be made after initial play tests. The board asked about potential conflicts with trail users, fairway surfaces and tournament play; staff said fairways are typically mowed openings or ground cover and that the design will avoid trail conflicts.
Board members expressed general enthusiasm for activating an underused park with a low-cost amenity. Staff also said sponsorship opportunities (to offset costs) will be available once the course is established. The project remains in the planning/discussion stage, and staff will return with updated timelines, a formal contract and sponsorship details if negotiations progress.
Ending: Staff will continue coordination with Johnson County Disc Golf, refine the course layout, finalize a budget and report back to the board for any formal approvals required.
