Board approves wall-sign variance for HNTB at 101 East Lincoln Way

The Valparaiso Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance on Tuesday to allow a wall sign above second-story windows at 101 East Lincoln Way for tenant HNTB.
Anne Grama of Sign Works of Michigan described the proposed sign as an 18-inch-high by about 65-inch-long halo-lit sign placed within the building’s original sign band. Grama said the request is modest and consistent with previous signage in that band and that the sign will support business identification and economic activity.
Rick Turner, the building developer, spoke in support, saying he has signed a lease with HNTB and that the tenant will bring jobs to the city. Resident Walt Beringer told the board he saw no reason to object and described the project as environmentally neutral compared with the previous property at the site.
Board members asked whether the new sign would address existing electrical boxes and how the sign would be lit. Grama said move-in work will include repair and cleaning of the sign band area and confirmed the lighting approach is "Halo Lit," a halo/backlit effect that produces a cloud-like glow around the letters.
A board member moved to approve variance 25-023 to allow the wall sign above the second-story windows; the motion was seconded and passed on a 4-0 roll call. The applicant thanked the board and said they would proceed with the sign installation and finish work in the sign band.
What’s next: With the variance approved, the applicant will finalize sign fabrication and obtain any required permits for installation and electrical work.
