Council discusses redevelopment proposals, downtown business openings and community events

Councilors used elected-official reports at the Oct. 27 meeting to update the public on redevelopment, downtown business openings and community events.

A councilor said the Redevelopment Commission issued RFPs for the old DMT muffler shop and received a full-price proposal; the councilor and staff (including Megan Hessel) will review the proposal. The council also discussed a separate proposal from Viewrail for property near the Hawkes Building and noted work is moving toward breaking ground on a nearby parcel.

An elected official reported a tree-planting event north of the high school organized by the Department of Environmental Resilience that drew about 40 volunteers, ranging from elementary students to retirees. Councilors noted holiday lights are going up downtown and new businesses (named in discussion as Nova and Cortado) are preparing to open.

Councilors announced a community conversation about SEA 1 with Mayor Lichtty and County Councilor Steven Clark at the Goshen Theater on Wednesday, Nov. 12 starting at 5:30 p.m.; the event will focus on SEA 1 impacts and may include moderated questions if time allows.

Other service updates included a brief progress estimate for the west-side roundabout (reported likely to open before Thanksgiving along Peddlers Village Road) and plans to redesign the meeting room after the court relocates to allow updated technology and flexible meeting space.
