Cindy Rekier presented possible sites and cost estimates Dec. 2 for installing one or two Swedish phone booths as public art in downtown Kingsburg and asked the board to continue work on locations and funding.
Rekier said the booths could be solar powered so they would not require hard wiring. She told the board SNS "said they could do the metal framing for 3,500 for each of them" and that SNS would make "a $1,500 donation" toward each unit.
Board members raised questions about whether proposed sites are in city-owned flower beds and whether nearby features or existing installations would conflict with the project. One member asked if the city has matching-grant programs; members recalled prior mural grants that were matched by the city.
The group discussed funding pathways: Rekier mentioned a microgrant program (noted by a board member as $15,000) as a possible source, but members agreed further work was needed to confirm whether the microgrant would be matching or cover the full cost. Rekier said she had not yet taken the proposal to city staff but could bring it to a council meeting or provide public comment to request collaboration.
Members encouraged Rekier to continue site work and to check with the city about ownership, maintenance and grant opportunities; no final approval or binding commitment to install the booths was made at the Dec. 2 meeting. Rekier said she would follow up with the board after speaking with city staff and council.
Next steps: Rekier will check city approvals and grant-match requirements and report back; the board suggested scheduling consideration on a future BID agenda after the city-step is clarified.
