During public comment at the Dec. 2 Denton County Commissioners Court meeting, resident LaCobra Wolf urged the court to investigate what she described as mismanagement at SPAN’s Meals on Wheels of Denton County.
"I just wanted to express my concerns in regards to SPAN's Meals on Wheels of Denton County...staff turnover, layoffs, while certain management receives bonuses and raises," Wolf said, adding that those circumstances have “eroded the public's trust” and could place seniors back on a waiting list.
Wolf told the court she had provided documentation to county staff and was following up in public comment to press officials to perform “a deep dive” into staffing changes, layoffs and board oversight. A volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Gordon Jones, later spoke and said he would be available to answer questions from the court or members of the public based on his experience as a volunteer.
No county staff or SPAN representative gave a formal response on the record during the public comment period; the court thanked the speakers for their remarks and proceeded with the agenda. The complaint was recorded in the meeting minutes but was not resolved or addressed by staff in open session during this meeting.
The claim, as made on the record, remains unresolved; commissioners did not move to open a separate investigation during the meeting. The court did not take immediate action on the matter in open session.
