City Administrator Andrew Parker told the Dalton City Council on the evening work session that "staff has been working to execute just over $50,000,000 of capital projects" from 2023 to the present and that the city has "been able to obtain about $8,000,000 in grant funding from state and federal partners." Parker said the majority of the work was funded through SPLOST, bonds and other local sources, and that staff also leveraged grant awards where possible.
The review grouped projects across several departments. Parker and department heads outlined major ongoing and completed projects including the John Davis Recreation Center (under construction and about 70% complete), a mill line trail extension, a new property and evidence building for the police department, several parks upgrades and drainage improvements, and airport hangar and airfield work. Parker also noted a pending $2.5 million pre-application to the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program for a parks project.
Council members praised staff for using a mix of federal, state and local funding, and for completing long-term maintenance and safety projects without increasing city taxes. The mayor reiterated the capital total in his closing remarks and said the council will plan additional public work sessions to discuss what comes next. The work session closed with an invitation for public questions and a brief break before the regular council meeting.
The council did not take formal votes during the work session; most items were informational updates and project timelines. Several projects named specific next steps and target dates, such as design completions, bid lettings and construction start windows.
