City staff and community members presented the final design for an all‑abilities playground at Franklin Park, funded primarily by Quimby funds allocated in the FY24–25 budget. Community Services Director Elizabeth House described a compact, 2,400‑square‑foot design featuring ramp access, sensory panels, platform rockers, spinners and auditory elements intended for children of varying abilities. The LA Kings Foundation is donating $75,000 toward the project and GameTime granted $99,000; those grants, together with the $500,000 Quimby allocation, reduce the net project cost to an estimated $315,000 according to staff.
Staff recommended council approve the design, add a small commemorative logo to the platform rocker honoring the LA Kings gift, and direct staff to prepare a purchase and installation agreement with GameTime. The council adopted the recommendation unanimously and directed staff to move forward with contract preparation and scheduling; staff said fabrication typically takes 6–8 weeks once equipment is ordered and estimated a ribbon cutting in summer 2026, acknowledging that the schedule could vary.
Councilmembers asked staff to consult the project playologist about optional fidget‑type panels and to ensure finishes and signage are durable and consistent with the city’s other markers. The public amenities commission and residents who worked on the project praised the design and the partnership with the Kings.
