The Florida Virtual School board spent a portion of its quarterly meeting celebrating student success and learning about an ESE-centered instructional pilot that the district plans to expand.
Doctor Algace, chief executive officer, highlighted several student stories, noting that Florida Virtual Full Time Public Schools was named a Purple Star School of Distinction for military-connected students and citing individual student achievements in aviation, international swimming competition and student entrepreneurship.
Trustees then viewed a works-of-art video and heard about a pilot led by David Fellows, a middle-school world-history instructor who converted his class into an ESE-centered virtual environment for students with verified IEPs or 504 plans. Presenters reported "the outcomes of David's ESE centered classroom have been resoundingly successful and highly impactful," with completion, retention and exam scores in some cases about 30% higher than comparable students, and that the model will expand to four teachers for the 2025–26 school year.
Board members praised the work and thanked instructors and staff for supporting diverse learners. The board did not take formal action on the pilot during the meeting; trustees expressed support and congratulated staff and students.
