Diana of the city's economic development team briefed members on a new state training requirement that took effect July 1, 2025. In addition to the existing eight‑hour post‑appointment training, "the statute states that members must complete 2 hours of continuing training on development and redevelopment programs each year," Diana said.
Diana said likely training providers include the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government and the Georgia Tech Center for Economic Development Research. The continuing training can be in person or online; trainings seen so far were primarily live or virtual-live, though Diana said on‑demand options may become available later.
The continuing training is tracked on a fiscal‑year basis; Diana said members will have until the end of the current fiscal year (June) to complete the first annual requirement, and staff will collect certificates or other documentation and maintain records for annual reporting. She warned that if a member fails to complete the continuing training for two consecutive years, "his or her voting rights would be suspended until the training is complete." Staff offered to assist with registration and to identify appropriate courses for members.
Board members asked whether trainings would be offered during evenings or only business hours; Diana said most offerings so far were during the business day but staff would explore scheduling options and check whether on‑demand options become available.
