Wayne County halts payment, orders repairs after substandard road work on Tanker Road

Wayne County officials told the Board of Commissioners on Dec. 1 that recent paving work on Tanker Road was not completed to county standards and that the prime contractor, Sykes Brothers, must return to correct defects at its expense.
Roads staff said the county stopped work and will not release final payment on the Tanker Road contract until repairs are completed and inspected. "We haven't paid them anything on Tanker until we have something that the county can actually accept," a county staff member said. Staff said the contractor must address issues that include skipped driveway tie-ins, incorrect leveling and other defects; in some cases the county will require full milling and re‑paving of affected areas.
Commissioners and staff also discussed public-safety concerns where shoulders drop away from the pavement and asked that interim signage be placed to warn drivers until permanent repairs are completed. Staff confirmed that the contract language allows the county to hold payment until work meets Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) standards adopted by the county for local projects.
Commissioners asked staff to document communications with the contractor and push for timely repairs; staff said they have been firm in their written contacts. The board emphasized it wants the work done correctly and reiterated that the county will not accept substandard work paid for by tax dollars.
