The Richmond City School Board voted Dec. 2 to accept recommendations from the vacant property committee related to dispossession and surplus of district-owned assets. Trustees said the vote formalized prior consensus reached during a Nov. 11 work session.

Facilities leadership briefed the Board on deferred maintenance across the division, noting an operating maintenance budget of roughly $6.3 million, of which about $2.0 million is available for unanticipated maintenance across more than 50 buildings and over 5 million square feet. Administration proposed a prioritization matrix that categorizes requests as high (fixed within 48 hours), medium (within two months) or low (within six months) depending on safety and operational need.

Trustees and staff discussed rollout and communication plans. Administration said it would begin by sharing the matrix and timelines with school leaders and custodial staff, then publish the guidance for families and post details on the district website. Board members asked for consistent criteria across districts and transparency on how medium- and low-priority work would be selected.

The Board accepted the committee recommendations and asked staff to present implementation materials and timelines to ensure consistent application across schools.
