The Oshkosh Plan Commission unanimously approved Dec. 2 a variance from industrial design standards to permit metal panel siding on the side and rear elevations of a proposed 9,300-square-foot building on Fernau Court that will house Winnebago County Housing Authority staff offices and vehicle storage.
Staff said code allows nondecorative metal panels if at least 15% of all elevations are enhanced with class‑1 or class‑2 materials; the applicant proposed to exceed that threshold on the front facade with stone veneer and windows while the side and rear would be primarily metal. Staff noted neighboring industrial buildings use similar metal siding and concluded the proposal would not harm the site’s appearance. A recent variance was granted to an adjoining property (Monroe Equipment) for similar siding, staff added.
No public speakers addressed the item. Commissioners moved and seconded adoption of staff findings and recommendations; roll-call vote was 9-0. Approval is for the design-standards variance only; any future building permits must meet other applicable code requirements.
