The City of Superior Common Council presented a surprise commendation to William “Bill” Amorty, honoring his induction into the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame on Oct. 21, 2017, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The mayor read the proclamation noting Amorty’s long tenure as manager of Richard I. Bong Airport since 1969, his roles as an airframe and power plant mechanic with inspection authorization, FAA designated pilot examiner, and owner of Twin Ports Flying Service since 1966.
The proclamation said Amorty took his first flight lesson on Aug. 5, 1962, soloed roughly a month later, earned his private pilot certificate in September 1963, advanced to airline transport pilot status, and has trained more than 3,000 pilots and administered nearly 4,000 flight tests. Council members applauded his contributions to airport improvements and community aviation outreach.
Amorty briefly accepted the commendation and thanked the council. The presentation was made during the meeting’s proclamations and commendations segment; no formal council action was required beyond the public recognition.
