Superior council adopts 2018 general fund budget, reallocates $65,008.98 to fire department

The Superior Common Council adopted the city’s 2018 general fund operating budget on Nov. 7 and approved a separate amendment to move $65,008.98 from a transfer line item into the fire department’s overtime, salary and benefits budgets.
Director Bronson told the council that the funds had originally been budgeted as a transfer to other funds to cover a SAFER grant that the city did not receive and asked that the money instead be placed in the fire department’s general fund accounts. Councilor Dalbec moved the amendment; Councilor Sutherland seconded. Councilors voted in favor of the transfer amendment and then approved the overall budget by voice vote.
City officials said the overall bottom‑line budget was unchanged by the reallocation; the change only redirects existing budgeted transfer funds to cover fire department personnel costs. Mayor and councilors confirmed that formal adoption of related ordinances will appear on the next council meeting agenda where required.
The council took the action after closing the public hearing on the general fund budget; no members of the public spoke on the budget during the hearing. The amendment and the final budget passed by voice vote.
