The Hawthorne City Planning Commission unanimously approved an after-the-fact color application for 13737 Hawthorne Boulevard, a former smog-check facility that had already been repainted black and orange with white accents. Senior Planner Maria Mesharek Maharik told the commission the applicant had not realized approval was required and asked for retroactive consent plus permission to paint the building’s rear white and to apply a graffiti-resistant coating.
"The applicant was unaware that they needed to get approval from the planning commission, so they went ahead and painted the building," Senior Planner Maria Mesharek Maharik said. Staff noted the rear of the building faces a residential neighborhood and recommended white for that elevation.
No applicant representative attended the meeting. After brief discussion and no substantive questions from commissioners, a motion to approve the color application passed on a roll-call vote with Commissioner Houston, Commissioner Toleda, Commissioner Swami and Chairperson Cohen voting in favor.
The approval includes conditions requested by staff: the use of a graffiti-resistant coating and repainting the rear elevation white. The commission’s action regularizes work already completed and directs staff to ensure the approved conditions are implemented.
