Albany County to advertise two newly available retail liquor licenses after census update

The Albany County Board of Commissioners voted Oct. 21 to authorize the county clerk to advertise two new retail liquor licenses that became available after revised 2024 census figures increased the county population by roughly 600 people.

Kayla, a county clerk’s office staff member, told commissioners the Wyoming Liquor Commission notified the county in early October that the population change entitled Albany County to two additional retail licenses. "Right now we have 10 and they are all filled," she said, explaining the options: the board could issue the licenses now by advertising and receiving applications, or wait. She told the board she would publish a legal notice and provide applications to interested parties.

Local business owner BJ tuned in to the meeting and urged the county to proceed, noting one retail license on the market was being offered for about $300,000. "It makes it easier on me for bookkeeping purposes to have a full retail liquor license as well as it helps keep business in the valley," he said.

Commissioners discussed options for awarding licenses if multiple applicants apply (lottery, interviews, or best‑qualified process) and confirmed that issuance would require a public hearing per state rules. A commissioner moved to advertise the two licenses, direct the clerk to publish notice for two consecutive weeks, and set the matter for public hearing; the motion carried by voice vote.

The clerk said applications would be reviewed and forwarded to the Wyoming Liquor Commission for final approval; any license issued would be prorated to the July renewal cycle and subject to the regular renewal process.

Next steps: the clerk will publish the legal notice, accept applications, and schedule the required public hearing before the board reviews applicants and the state makes final licensing determinations.
