County counselor seeks dialogue with Leavenworth County over juvenile corrections advisory board

County Counselor Mister Henderson briefed the Atchison County Commission on a draft letter to the Leavenworth County Board of County Commissioners asking whether Leavenworth is willing to discuss the status of its newly created juvenile corrections advisory board before Atchison County seeks an opinion from the Kansas attorney general.
Henderson said Leavenworth County adopted a resolution to create its own juvenile corrections advisory board more than a year ago; he said formal appointment steps, such as recommendation from the chief judge, had not been followed and the chief judge therefore had not appointed members to Leavenworth’s board. Henderson said the first judicial district juvenile corrections advisory board has continued to meet and that the Department of Corrections was uncertain which board to recognize, effectively recognizing both boards for practical purposes.
Henderson said the draft letter offers Leavenworth an opportunity to discuss the matter before Atchison County requests an attorney general opinion on the status and authority of the two boards. Commissioners voted 2–0 to place the letter on county letterhead and authorize signatures to seek dialog with Leavenworth County.
