RTA architects presented initial schematic designs for the new 3 Springs Elementary at a Durango School District meeting. The architects described a preferred "In the Woods" concept set back from the road with classrooms placed behind the main entry and front-of-house functions — administration, gym, cafeteria and preschool — given direct access.
Speaker 4 said the team reviewed utilities, existing vegetation, topography and drainage and believes the proposed site placement works 'with the drainage and not against it.' The architects presented one-versus-two story analyses and concluded that, given deep foundations caused by poor soils and overall cost considerations, "1 story was the way to go," providing better indoor-outdoor connections and inclusive experiences for all learners.
Design features highlighted included preschool and kindergarten playgrounds on one side of the campus, a field and two-level playgrounds on the opposite side, and an Innovation Hub described as a calming media center/creative space at the heart of the school. The team described a pedestrian corridor intended to keep students out of the parking area and a front porch entrance framed by landscaping and trails to improve circulation and safety.
The architects said a community meeting is scheduled next week to gather additional feedback; schematic design was previously reviewed by the district in August. The presentation emphasized materials that reflect both high desert and mountain contexts and indicated the project will avoid combustible vinyl corners on exterior finishes.
