Atchison County certifies Nov. 4 results, counts 12 of 16 provisional ballots

Atchison County commissioners on Monday canvassed provisional ballots from the Nov. 4 general election, accepted the county clerk’s recommendations on 12 of 16 provisionals and adopted the official election results.

County clerk Katie presented the provisional ballots and explained recommendations case by case, citing registration deadlines and residency verification. "I think we were anticipating about 1,200, and we had 1,514," Katie said when asked about turnout. The clerk told commissioners that 12 provisional ballots met statutory requirements and four did not.

Commissioners questioned two closely timed registration cases and confirmed the statutory cutoff. The clerk explained that one voter had updated registration on Oct. 20, missing the Oct. 15 deadline, while another updated on Oct. 10 and therefore met the deadline. The commission moved, seconded and approved the clerk’s recommendations on the provisionals by voice vote.

After a brief recess and return to open session, the clerk delivered the official election totals. Chair announced, "All races remain the same from the unofficial result winners," and commissioners voted 3 to 0 to adopt the official results. The chair said the certified results will be published on the county website and social media.

The commission’s actions on provisional ballots were procedural determinations based on voter registration records and residency verifications; no contests or changes to declared winners were recorded in the transcript. The clerk and commissioners noted elevated turnout compared with expectations. The commission recessed into workshop following adoption of the results.
