Chair Carantones moved and the Arlington County Board approved the temporary appointment of Maureen Coffey as acting board chair while he is out of the country.
"I then want to move to appoint my colleague, Maureen Coffey, as acting board chair during the temporary absence of myself, Chair Carantones, from 12 noon on Friday, 10/03/2025 to 12 in the morning on Sunday, 10/12/2025," Chair Carantones said during a special session on Oct. 3, 2025. He told the board he will be attending a conference in Germany.
The motion was seconded by Board member Spain. Chair Carantones called the vote, and after members voiced their support he announced, "So the motion carries 4 2 0." The transcript does not record individual roll-call votes; the board announced the tally as four in favor, two opposed and zero abstentions.
Carantones also told the board that Vice Chair DeFerrandi is on "modified paternity leave" after recently becoming a father and was not online for the vote. A board member restated for the record that the purpose of the action was to appoint an acting chair for the stated period.
With no further business, the chair adjourned the special session.
The appointment will make Maureen Coffey the acting presiding officer of the Arlington County Board from 12 noon on Oct. 3, 2025, until 12 a.m. on Oct. 12, 2025; the transcript does not specify any additional delegated authorities or follow-up reporting requirements.
