The City of Angola Historic Preservation Commission on Nov. 19 reviewed its October cemetery tour and agreed to plan an expanded October weekend event next year, with adjustments to scheduling, ticketing and lighting.
Members said roughly 47 people attended this year's tour and reported event receipts of $620. Commissioners and volunteers discussed logistics including online pre‑sales, volunteer docent capacity, and adding brighter solar lighting for nighttime sections of the tour. One member noted that selling tickets only online helps staff better prepare and avoid on‑site confusion; another suggested holding some daytime slots for seniors uncomfortable walking at night.
To increase capacity, the commission discussed shortening tour groups to 15‑minute increments to allow more tours in the same time window, while acknowledging that approach would require more volunteers and coordination. Members suggested exploring sponsorships (for example, from local groups such as horsemen's associations) and partnering with Main Street to provide additional volunteer support.
The commission discussed dates and tentatively identified an October weekend that would not conflict with downtown Halloween programming. Staff agreed to begin planning and ticketing earlier next year and to consider keeping some tickets at the door only if that would not undercut online pre‑sales.
The commission said it will reuse lessons from the October tour (volunteer staffing, clearer ticketing instructions in media outreach and stronger lighting) when developing next year’s event schedule.
