Doctor warns wildfire smoke left Wenatchee High's indoor air hazardous; district readies purifiers and action plans

The Wenatchee School District on Dec. 2 heard a health briefing showing wildfire smoke has been linked to spikes in respiratory visits among local children and that some mitigation measures can reduce those visits.
Dr. Bindu Nayak, an endocrinologist with Confluence Health, told the board particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke is the primary pollutant of concern and said it is ‘‘more toxic than PM2.5 from other air pollutants.’’ She cited data from the district's 2022 smoke episode showing concurrent peaks in ambient PM2.5 and emergency-department visits for children with asthma.
Nayak described two clinical tools used in a Confluence pilot: an electronic asthma action plan added to patients' electronic health records and a wildfire-smoke action plan adapted from pediatric pulmonology guidance. Comparing children who had both plans to those who did not, Confluence reported about 50% fewer respiratory-related emergency visits and about 71% fewer outpatient respiratory visits among the planned group; she cautioned the sample sizes are relatively small but called the reductions "very promising."
Board members and staff pressed on what that means for schools. Nayak said indoor air can be as harmful as outdoor air during heavy smoke and reported measurements taken Oct. 7 inside Wenatchee High School by Chelan-Douglas Health District sensors that showed indoor Air Quality Index readings ranging roughly from 133 to 244 in different building areas on that day, evidence the building's HVAC and filtration were not keeping smoke out. She said loaned air scrubbers and continuous-use purifiers lowered indoor levels over several days.
District leadership described interim steps already in place: purchase of portable air purifiers/scrubbers and DIY box-fan filter units, distribution of roughly 35 box-fan filter kits to Wenatchee High School through a health-district grant, and new air-quality index readers held by the district for rapid response when smoke events begin. Superintendent Corey said the district will continue to coordinate with the health district to deploy equipment quickly and recommended building-level resilience as a longer-term goal.
Nayak also urged structural solutions: upgraded HVAC filtration and ventilation or a rebuilt high school designed to sustain healthy indoor air during smoke episodes. She framed clinical and building interventions as complementary: action plans reduce immediate medical risk, while building improvements would protect all occupants more reliably.
Next steps announced at the meeting included continued data collection, maintenance of a pool of portable purifiers and box-fan filter units for rapid deployment, and discussions between district staff and local public-health partners about expanding the asthma/wildfire action-plan rollout to more primary-care providers and connecting plans to school nurses.
