Committee reports: NCC audit clean, vocational-technical renovation on track, Colonial IU highlights AI policy discussion; board recognizes health-services lead

Committee and administrative reports at the Nov. 17 Bethlehem Area SD meeting covered higher-education collaboration, facility renovations, interim-unit contracts and equity work.

Dr. Beck Cooley, reporting on Northampton Community College trustees’ Nov. 13 meeting, said the college received a clean audit and noted a 5% increase in credit hours over the prior year. Cooley also described a new collaboration to design a fiber-optic fusion-splicing certificate and said NCC earned the PA CARES designation from the Pennsylvania Department of Education for 2025–26 for student mental-health and suicide-prevention efforts. "We've got an update on the audit for the college, which was a clean audit," Cooley said.

Missus Schenkel summarized a Nov. 5 Bethlehem Vocational Technical School presentation on renovations to the South Side building and main campus; boards expect a separate presentation and the majority of work to be complete by 2026.

Dr. Shively reported from the Colonial Intermediate Unit Oct. 23 meeting: approvals of service agreements to support Title I and Title II operations, and a presentation emphasizing responsible AI use in education and the need for policy guardrails.

Board members also described equity-office engagement with community stakeholders about Title I funding and noted work to advance Freemansburg Elementary School’s process to become a community school. In personnel business, the board approved the retirement of Dr. Brannon, the district’s coordinator of health services, effective July 1; the chair praised Brannon’s leadership during the COVID pandemic and service to students and staff.
