Board approves school improvement plans first reading, removes ballistics-knife definition from policy and signs off on Title I comparability report

The Aberdeen Public School Board voted Oct. 27 to approve several routine governance items: first reading of school improvement plans, a deletion to policy JICI removing the "ballistics knife" definition, and the Title I comparability report.

On school improvement plans — required documentation for the district's accreditation process — the board approved first reading by voice vote after staff presented the materials and asked for board consideration.

Policy JICI was presented with a single deletion: the definition of "ballistics knife." Staff said they consulted with school resource officers and determined the item is already covered under the state's knife statute. Board members queried what a ballistics knife is (one member compared it to a switchblade); a motion to approve the policy change was placed on the floor by Sharp and seconded by Beckes, and the motion passed by voice vote.

The comparability report, intended to demonstrate equitable staff-to-student ratios across Title I and non-Title schools, was presented with supporting documentation indicating parity across the district's five Title schools and one non-Title school (CC Lee). Olson moved approval, Scharf seconded, and the board approved the report by voice vote.

No roll-call vote tallies were recorded in the meeting transcript; actions were approved by voice vote as reflected in the minutes. The meeting adjourned following a motion by Doctor Boardman with a second by Murphy.
