Board approves naming Fairview Elementary gymnasium for Jim Compton

The Blount County Board of Education voted to approve naming Fairview Elementary School’s gymnasium the Jim Compton Gymnasium following tributes from staff and community members.
Board members moved and seconded the measure after multiple speakers described Compton’s long service to Fairview and the district. The Fairview principal asked the board to approve the naming “as a lasting tribute to a man who dedicated nearly his entire adult life to the students, families, and schools of our community.” Speakers described Compton’s career at Fairview, his coaching tenure beginning in 1976, continued presence at games through 2019, his eight years on this board and his induction into the Blount County Teachers Hall of Fame.
Supporters said the naming would recognize Compton’s work as a teacher, coach and negotiator for the Blount County Education Association. Phil Porter said he had “the great experience of working with Jim Compton” and recounted how students were Compton’s first priority. Stan Burnett told the board, “If you ever had the privilege of talking to him, no matter what you're going through, you always felt better after you talked to him.”
The chair called a roll call vote after the motion and second were recorded. Miss Dany administered the roll call and the board recorded affirmative votes to approve the naming.
The board did not specify a formal unveiling date in the meeting record; members asked staff to proceed with appropriate next steps to implement the naming.
The meeting moved on to other business following the vote.
