Albany celebrates CERT graduation, including first Mandarin course cohort

Albany — The council held a ceremonial recognition for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) graduates during its meeting on Dec. 1.
Fire Chief (introduced) and Captain Tim Smizer highlighted that two CERT classes ran in the fall — one taught in English and the other the city said was the first Mandarin‑language CERT class in California, supported by a grant to Albany CERT, Inc. Captain Smizer noted the fall training brought Albany’s total CERT graduates to about 316 and introduced instructors and volunteers who organized the program.
Graduates were called forward, recited an oath of affirmation and accepted certificates from council and fire department leadership. Officials said the program strengthens neighborhood preparedness and thanked volunteers and instructors for their work.
