Berkeley County approves $2.26 million landfill gas expansion to boost methane capture

Berkeley County's public utilities committee voted to award a landfill gas-to-energy expansion to SES Field Services for $2,260,850, a project county staff said would add 50 new gas wells to the existing 120-well system.
Speaking to the committee, Ms. Wheat described the expansion as the first since 2018 and said the original system was installed in 2009. "I ask that council please award this project to SES Field Services in the amount of $2,260,850," she said. She told the committee that since 2016 the county has averaged about $63,000 a year in revenue from the gas, but that low gas quality in the past year had resulted in no payments and provided one rationale for expanding the system.
Ms. Wheat said the expansion aims to increase flow from roughly 200 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) to around 700 SCFM so the engines at Santee Cooper's generating station can run. Committee members asked for clarifications on the number of current wells (120) and the target flow; the motion to award the contract carried by voice vote.
Next steps are contract finalization and project scheduling with the contractor; staff did not provide a project completion date in the committee record.
