Braintree council honors Councilor Shannon Hume at final meeting

Councilor Shannon Hume used her final Town Council meeting on Dec. 2 to thank residents, colleagues and town staff for what she called '18 years' of service across the school committee and town council.
Hume recalled serving on the school committee and later becoming the first woman elected to the town council and the first female council president. She thanked mayors Joe Sullivan, Kokoris and Joyce, three school superintendents by name, and numerous colleagues and staff, closing her remarks with: "Thank you for allowing me to serve the town of Braintree. It's truly been an honor."
Several councilors responded with tributes in the chamber. A speaking colleague recalled Hume's 'institutional memory' and leadership on school issues; Councilor Baraka said Hume 'blazed the path' for other women; Councilor Flaherty credited her leadership during the COVID period; Councilor Maglio described Hume as a 'personal Wikipedia' whose experience helped newer members; Councilor Moore praised her respectful directness; Quilty and others offered thanks and best wishes. President Ryan presented a framed historical document as a ceremonial gift and invited family members forward for photographs.
The council paused its regular business for the remarks and returned to the published agenda after the presentation.
