Penncrest athletic directors propose girls soccer cooperative to address low rosters; board to consider vote in December

Sean Rhodes, Maplewood's athletic director, told the board the district "can no longer continue to field these 2 separate soccer programs" after several seasons in which teams regularly played with seven to nine players and sustained multiple injuries.

Rhodes said combining the programs in a cooperative agreement would give girls a safer, more competitive environment and increase the chance of having full rosters, although he acknowledged a co-op is not a guarantee of higher numbers. He noted the boys' program already operates as a cooperative and that hosting logistics favor Maplewood because of existing facilities.

Board members asked detailed questions about classification impacts under the governing association (referenced in the meeting as "Piattible"), deadlines for cooperative-agreement applications, transportation and field-maintenance concerns, and whether playing up a classification would affect postseason eligibility. Rhodes and other ADs said the new classification parameters had just been released and they would verify numbers, appeal processes and hosting implications before the December vote.

No formal vote was taken; board leadership asked ADs to return with refined data and a formal motion in December. Several board members emphasized balancing facility maintenance and equitable access for students across the district.

The discussion included specific numerical reporting: Rhodes said Maplewood started the season with 13 girls and finished with nine, and cited combined roster totals when co-op teams have briefly reached a maximum of about 12 players together.
