BZA grants Farm Bureau sign variance after board adjusts requested height

The Berkeley County Board of Zoning Appeals granted a variance to allow a taller sign for Farm Bureau Insurance at 587 College Park Road.
Robert Bazar, representing Farm Bureau Insurance, said the property sits several feet below the roadbed and that clients were missing the location. “We were gonna follow… size and everything else. It's just that College Park's built up a few feet there,” Bazar said, asking permission to build a taller sign to match neighboring signs.
The board discussed base height versus total height and suggested an adjustment that would compensate for the drop in grade. The chair proposed adding roughly four feet to the allowance to offset the lower grade and offered a 16-foot total as a compromise; Bazar said that would be acceptable. Mister Shire moved to grant the variance; Mister Mello seconded and the board approved the motion by voice vote.
The variance approval permits the applicant to construct the sign with the agreed height adjustment; final dimensions and compliance with any other site conditions will be confirmed during permitting.
The applicant thanked the board for its consideration.
