Steve Grama, executive director of the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC), presented an overview of the association’s priorities and recent state-level developments.
Grama described MAC’s three primary functions—advocacy, education and services—and reviewed legislative topics likely to affect counties, including revenue sharing, court-funding reform workgroup recommendations, and a new road-funding plan that he said could produce roughly $1.5–$1.85 billion annually focused on local roads. He also discussed an estimated $420 million in marijuana excise tax revenue tied to a ballot-initiative issue that may be subject to judicial review.
Grama said MAC had submitted a bid in response to an MDHHS RFP to preserve local options and noted new state grant funds for public safety and other county priorities. He invited commissioners to MAC events and committees and answered questions about specific programs and the RFP status.
Commissioners thanked Grama for the update and had a brief exchange about MAC’s bid and the uncertain path of state legislation and litigation.
