Brandon Valley School Board hears construction and enrollment updates; superintendent stresses meal-application requirement

Brandon Valley School District 49-2 board members received updates on construction, enrollment and meal-assistance rules and approved routine agenda and personnel items during a short meeting.

Superintendent Larson told the board that construction at Brandon Valley Elementary is progressing and that the district will slightly tweak a school boundary at Madison Street and Highway 11 to follow the river south of Madison instead of following Highway 11, citing a bridge closure on Highway 42 as the reason. He said affected families will receive letters in the next month explaining the change.

Larson said work on the Brandon Valley Middle School addition is continuing with a push to enclose the project so interior work can continue through winter. He also highlighted the recently released state public report card and said he will present that material in the district's state-of-the-schools address.

"We have 5,211 students, grades junior kindergarten through twelfth grade," Larson said, adding that this represents "growth of approximately 80" students and that enrollment slightly exceeds the budget projection.

Larson emphasized the district requirement for families seeking help from local Angel Fund resources: "To qualify for free or reduced meals, you have to apply," he said, adding that the district cannot allocate Angel Fund assistance for families who do not complete the free- or reduced-price meals application.

A board member asked whether a federal government shutdown could affect the district's ability to feed students. Larson said he had "received no information that that specifically is being impacted" but that a prolonged shutdown "could potentially have impacts" and deferred to district finance staff for specifics. Another board member noted that federal title funds and IDEA grants are typically forward-funded for the year and said those grants are "safe" for the current fiscal year.

Larson said the district delegation met with state executive leadership about the upcoming legislative session and cautioned that officials had indicated a likely "very lean" state budget year with little new funding for education; the district will continue advocacy about staff compensation and other needs.

The superintendent also congratulated extracurricular achievers: he recognized the Brandon Valley dance team for a state championship and singled out Micah Peterson as Class AA boys state cross-country champion.
