Metuchen Board approves routine personnel, finance, policy and curriculum items; welcomes two new hires

METUCHEN, N.J. — The Metuchen Board of Education on Oct. 14 introduced two recently hired staff members and approved a package of routine personnel, finance, policy and curriculum items by roll call.

The board welcomed Chioma Asai, introduced as a music teacher leave replacement for Miss Gallagher, and Julianne Ulmer, introduced as a social worker leave replacement. Asai told the board she studied classical piano at Montclair State and has international study experience; she said she is grateful for the opportunity. Ulmer, who said she graduated from Rutgers in May with a master’s in social work, described prior internships with first‑time mothers and work with high‑school students in alternative education.

After introductions, the board moved a set of minutes and consent items. The chair moved to approve the September special and regular meeting minutes; the motion passed on roll call (one abstention). The board then moved personnel items (a1–a12), finance items (b1–b6), policy items (c1–c2) and a curriculum item (d1). Each motion was seconded and carried by recorded vote.

During the finance discussion, a district official noted that 28 professional‑development requests were submitted and that green‑team members from each school will attend a workshop Oct. 21. The official also said the district will receive a Sustainable Jersey Schools recognition and that a separate district award is currently under embargo; more details will be shared when they are no longer embargoed.

The actions were procedural and intended to authorize routine hires, programming and budget items needed to operate the schools. No substantive policy changes or contested votes were recorded in the meeting minutes.

The board closed with school announcements and adjourned for the evening. The next committee meeting was announced by the construction committee as Nov. 17 and the next public board meeting as Dec. 15.
