BURLINGTON — The Burlington Community School District board on Oct. 30 approved higher tuition rates for its early‑childhood program, the district said, with the changes set to take effect Dec. 1, 2025.
A district presenter told the board the early‑childhood program is funded separately from the district’s Pre‑K–12 operating budget and said rising expenses — including higher staff salaries and higher costs for supplies and operations — made the increase necessary. “It’s its own entity, and we we are gonna need to raise the rates,” the presenter said.
The district presented the following weekly rates as its recommended schedule: $265 per week for 1‑ and 2‑year‑olds; $255 per week for 3‑year‑olds (a 3‑year‑old preschool‑only option was listed at $130); and $245 per week for full‑day 4‑year‑old preschool. The presenter said the rates would take effect Dec. 1 and that a letter explaining the changes would be mailed to families or sent via the ParentSquare app; a copy of that notice was also emailed to board members earlier in the day.
Board members asked whether outside grants would offset the increases. The presenter said startup grants that helped launch the program had tapered off over time and that no new grants were available at present; the district also has a staff member who actively pursues grant opportunities.
The chair called for a motion to approve the December 2025 tuition schedule. A board member moved to approve the rates and Director Anderson seconded the motion. The chair called for a voice vote and recorded affirmative “aye” responses before declaring the motion passed; the transcript records verbal assent but does not show a roll‑call or a full numerical tally by name.
After approving the rates, the board moved to adjourn the special session; the motion to adjourn was seconded and approved by voice vote.
District officials said families will receive written notice about the rate changes via mail and the ParentSquare app; the presenter also said an emailed copy of the family notice was distributed to board members the morning of Oct. 30.
