Burke County’s Animal Services Department reported rising intakes alongside strong positive outcome rates and described multiple outreach tactics and a new shelter project during the Nov. 17 meeting.
Director Caitlin Suttermeyer said Animal Services operates on an annual budget of about $960,000 with nine full-time staff. Department data show approximately 89% of animals leaving the facility do so with a positive outcome; average length of stay has fallen to roughly six to seven days, she said. Programs designed to reduce shelter intake and speed placements include a foster-care push, a "business buddies" adoption pilot that placed longer-term dogs with local businesses, and a planned microchip clinic in partnership with the public library.
Suttermeyer described GIS-driven analysis that identified intake and owner-surrender hotspots (including Morganton and areas near Hickory) and targeted outreach where services — community support, reuniting animals with owners and microchip scanning stations — can reduce shelter entries. She said the department has assisted 12 families and kept 122 animals out of the shelter through early outreach pilot efforts.
Suttermeyer also updated the board on a new shelter facility in construction, described staff training and revised SOPs being prepared for the transition, and highlighted staff awards. The board voted to accept the report as presented.
