BVSD board approves revised school-calendar language and adds neutrality sentence on religion at school events

Trustee Lalania Quinlan proposed replacing or relocating that language; several trustees, including Alex and Jason, argued the clause was unnecessary or ambiguous. Trustee Alex moved to adopt the policy after striking the newly inserted language; the motion was seconded by Beth and passed on a roll call vote with Trustee Sergeant voting No.
On IGAC, Trustee Quinlan proposed adding a sentence to the policy's neutrality section that would read, in effect, that "the school district shall not conduct or sanction any service that is religious in nature and shall not include religious invocations, benedictions, or formal prayer at school-sponsored events." The board debated how the change should treat historical baccalaureate practices and whether exceptions (for example, an unofficial choir singing at a funeral) might be appropriate; staff said the policy language aims to prevent district- or staff-sponsored religious services while allowing private activities outside district sponsorship. The motion to add the neutrality sentence passed on roll call.
Both policy votes followed formal motions, roll-call votes, and public board discussion; staff committed to returning additional redlines on related instructional policies at a future meeting.
