Residents press board for career pathways and bus-timeliness data; board outlines transportation committee changes

Several residents and students used the meeting—s public comment period to press the Boone County Board of Education on career opportunities and transportation concerns.
Charlie Bufano, president of the Boone County Classified Employees Association, said no one had followed up after his comments at the prior meeting and that the situation "is actually not getting any better." He asked the board to engage with classified staff on outstanding concerns.
Nathan Taylor told the board he had discovered the district does not offer certain career or military pathway options for students and said he has contacts and materials he is willing to share. "I did not understand that Boone County did not offer any opportunities or options for the students," Taylor said, and offered to meet with staff to present possible solutions.
On transportation, a board member asked for a districtwide report showing how many students arrive late on buses and how much instructional time is missed each week. Administration said it could disseminate that information prior to the next meeting and staff were willing to meet directly with concerned board members and parents.
Board members also described plans to reorganize transportation oversight into an operations committee that would include broader representation from drivers, dispatchers, routers and trainers rather than only directors and administrators. One board member said transportation should have "at least 1, maybe 2 more representatives" on the committee to cover the department's complex functions.
Next steps: staff said they will gather and share transportation timeliness data and meet with community members and veterans who offered assistance; board members will continue work on committee membership and representation.
