Council rejects proposal to charge Punta Gorda Housing Authority single‑family sanitation rates while units are vacant

Kurt Panchuk, director of the Housing Authority, said HUD funding and residents' relocation left the property without income and the authority is using other program funds to cover operating expenses for the vacant property. He described demolition and reconstruction plans and hoped redevelopment would be complete by 2026. "We're taking our capital fund program...to pay operating expenses for Oaktree Village," he said, explaining the financial strain.
A council amendment proposed charging the housing authority single-family sanitation rates while the property is vacant as a compromise; supporters argued it would relieve pressure on public-housing finances while keeping a charge in place. Opponents warned that creating an exception could set a precedent for many post-disaster requests and would require consistent policy. The motion to reduce the fee to a single-family rate failed on a 2–2 vote; absent a majority, the request was denied.
