The Town of Speedway on Nov. 24 voted to accept a $35,000 seed grant from the National Fitness Campaign and move forward with installation of an outdoor fitness court at Leonard Park.

Tammy, representing the town's parks program, told council the project includes two components: a fitness-court area for body-weight exercises and a larger "studio" side designed to host instructor-led classes such as Zumba, tai chi, aerobics and yoga. "We actually received a $35,000 seed grant for this court," she said, adding the town will work with the campaign's design studio to incorporate artwork specific to Speedway.

Tammy described site constraints and safety measures: the campaign requires the court be at least 150 feet from playground equipment so children will not mistake the station for a play structure. She said engineers have identified a rectangular area on the northwest corner of Leonard Park, outside the west ball diamond, and the town is determining the court's exact orientation to minimize blind spots and improve visibility for public safety patrols.

Council members asked about capacity, scheduling and equipment security. Tammy said the studio side can accommodate roughly two dozen people depending on activity, and that permanent equipment will be secured; users will be able to access exercise guidance via a QR code on-site. She noted Speedway would be the first fitness court in Marion County and one of only a few in Indiana.

The council voted 5-0 to adopt Resolution No. 2025-21 to accept the grant and allocate funds to move the project forward. The town will finalize the precise location and schedule as staff completes engineering and design work.
