Byram Hills administrators on Oct. 14 presented an "AI toolkit" the district developed after two years of study and recommended that academic departments create specific, published expectations for how students may use artificial intelligence in classwork.
"We break it down into academic integrity, critical evaluation, privacy and security, and accountability," said Tim, who described the toolkit as a living resource available on the district website. Kevin, the assessment/technology lead, said the district began studying AI tools when ChatGPT first emerged in late 2022 and has focused on practical classroom use cases since.
English department chair Dwayne demonstrated classroom uses of small, curated language models: teachers can upload a controlled set of texts (for example, Shakespeare plays) and use the model to generate study guides, flashcards and targeted feedback; some tools retain transcripts so teachers can review students' questions and monitor progress. "It allows us to curate the materials that the AI looks at," Kevin said, adding that curated models reduce the risk of irrelevant or hallucinated results.
District staff reported student focus groups showed learners want clearer rules. "They wanted help on how to use AI from their teachers," Tim said, and chairs were asked to develop department guides that state whether AI is allowed, when permission is required and how to cite use — similar to some college syllabi.
Administrators described a three‑column departmental rubric used in early pilots: green for uses already common (search/definition/support), gray for cases requiring teacher permission, and red for uses that violate academic integrity. They recommended including AI policies in opening‑day syllabi so students understand expectations.
What happens next: department chairs will draft and share AI guidance for their disciplines; staff will continue professional learning and may return to the board with updates.
